BGU selects PowerPlug as PC Network Power Management Software

Ben Gurion University of the Negev (BGU), one of Israel’s leading universities, has selected PowerPlug Pro as its PC Network Power Management Software, for campus-wide implementation. PowerPlug Pro manages the power consumption of thousands of PCs at BGU, powering them down when they are not in use to save electricity and money, while keeping the user experience unaffected.

“After an in-depth evaluation process we selected PowerPlug Pro, whose flexibility and advanced features put it well ahead of the competition” Said Alon Goldin, BGU’s Head of IT. “Because of the diversity of PC uses at BGU, the ability to delegate power management capabilities to departmental IT managers was critical for us. Using PowerPlug Pro’s distributed management, every departmental IT manager can define power plans applicable to PCs under his or her control, ensuring user needs are optimally met. Another key consideration in selecting PowerPlug Pro was the ability to temporarily exclude PCs from power savings using dynamic, accurate criteria. It allowed us to distribute PowerPlug Pro throughout the organization without fearing it will power down computers running overnight simulations or other critical research processes. We simply created power-down exceptions that would ensure critical activities would not be affected, and rolled out savings plans en masse.”

“We are proud to have a leading academic institution such as Ben Gurion University among our customers” said Eyal Yechieli, CEO of PowerPlug. “BGU’s commitment to green IT and its wish to save money in the face of rising electricity tariffs make PowerPlug Pro an ideal solution for its needs. We were pleased to reach first place on BGU’s thorough evaluation process and to launch PowerPlug Pro on campus.”

PowerPlug Pro reduces electricity consumption for PCs in personal use at BGU (by faculty members, administrators and others) as well as on public PCs (in libraries and other public locations). PowerPlug Pro saves approximately 70% of PC electricity consumption at BGU.

PowerPlug Pro PC Energy Saving | PC Power Management Software for PC energy savings | Leading PC Power Saving Software

The latest in PC Power Management software, PowerPlug Pro 2.5 introduces unique power management features that help organizations maximize electricity and cost savings.

PowerPlug has released the latest version of PowerPlug Pro, the leader in PC Power Management software solutions. PowerPlug Pro 2.5 includes unique, market-leading power management features, including:

Advanced Power-down Conditions – PowerPlug Pro 2.5 now allows placing activity and performance-related conditions on power savings operations, executing such operations only when these conditions are met. For example, a PC may be instructed to stay up if a process (anti-virus, backup software etc.) is running and taking up a certain level of system resources (e.g. requires high CPU or disk I/O). Power savings will only commence once the condition is met – e.g. that process will drop below a defined threshold. These advanced power-down conditions enables organizations to distribute PowerPlug Pro across all organizational PCs, knowing that it will not interfere with critical IT or business processes.

Delegated Management – Administrators of large organizations can delegate the management of power saving policies to different branches and departments. This allows local branch/department administrators to customize power-saving policies to their specific needs, and deliver first level support independently.

One-click Remote PC Wakeup – the PowerPlug Wakeup Portal now offers complete integration into an organization’s intranet. Administrators can embed wakeup links on existing intranet pages (e.g. SharePoint), allowing each user to wake up his/her own computer remotely. User-to-PC mappings are automatically performed – no need to configure which user can wake which PC.

Some of PowerPlug’s customers – including large medical centers, IT companies and government agencies – have already upgraded to PowerPlug Pro 2.5 and are enjoying its unique feature set.

Sheba saves on pc energy costs
Largest Medical Center in Israel Expected to Save Over $150K Annually in PC Energy Costs in 2011, Cutting Carbon Emissions

Sheba Medical Center Rolls out PowerPlug Pro for Enterprise PC Power Management

As part of its energy efficiency and environmental strategy, Sheba Medical Center has implemented PowerPlug Pro for PC Power Management across its campus. PowerPlug Pro currently saves over $10K a month in electricity costs.

“Evaluating PowerPlug Pro as a tool for managing PC power management, we never imagined we could reach nearly 40% savings in PC power consumption and PC energy costs, worth over $10,000 a month” says Bruno Lavi, CIO of Sheba Medical Center. “We also prevented 300 tons of CO2 from reaching the atmosphere in the first half of 2011 alone”, continued Lavi.

PowerPlug Pro establishes different power saving plans to suit the needs of different departments and users. PowerPlug Pro allows user and administrators to wake up sleeping computers when needs, or in a scheduled manner. PowerPlug Pro produces a range of management reports, which include electricity savings and financial benefits.

“Although Sheba Medical Center is Israel’s largest hospital, and has over 4,000, integration and complete coverage took only a few days, with a smooth handover to our IT personnel. The recent electricity cost increases reaffirmed us that we are on the right path when we try to save energy. As we learn more about our power consumption, I expect we will be able increase the savings we get from PowerPlug Pro.”

About Sheba Medical Center

Serves as Israel’s national medical center in many fields. With 150 departments and clinics, 1,700 beds, 7,500 healthcare professionals and scientists, Sheba handles more than 1.5 million annual patient visits and conducts at least 25 percent of all Israeli medical research.
